The shojo manga Oboreru Knife by George Asakura is becoming a live-action movie slated to be released across Japan in autumn 2016. Even with its serialization concluded, the series still receives ardent support and is a huge hit with over 1.4 million copies in print. Now it’s coming to the big screen.
Oboreru Knife is a shojo manga serialized from October 2004 to December 2013 in Kodansha’s Bessatsu Friend. The series has struck a chord with fans for its depiction of the distinctive clashing of hearts between boys and girls.
Main character Natsume Mochizuki was a magazine model in Tokyo but moves to the rural town of Ukigumocho. Mochizuki, feeling depressed about living in the boring countryside, meets Koichiro Hasegawa, a member of a local prominent family of Shinto priests, and gets caught in an intense attraction… It’s an epic love story that intensely and beautifully depicts the feelings of omnipotence and frustration that comes with being a teenager.
Directing is 26-year-old young creator Yuki Yamato. Since her debut in 2012, Yamato has expressed the excessive self-consciousness of young girls, and has to date gained attention mostly in mini theaters. It will be interesting to see what kind of movie this director who’s a huge fan of the original manga will create.
Original creator George Asakura gave the following comment showing her anticipation for the movie: “I drew Oboreru Knife thinking I would make the kind of manga that couldn’t be adapted into a live-action movie, so I’m so excited my heart won’t stop pounding!!! I believe in director Yamato, so I’m sitting at home waiting…!!!” Director Yamato also talked about her feelings for the original manga: “I’ve always loved the Oboreru Knife manga. I read it over and over again in a corner of the countryside and savored every emotion.” She continued, declaring her determination, “I will give this movie my all for the fans who respect George Asakura and are grateful for this movie adaptation, for the delight of fans of the starring actors too, of course, and to be able to make a movie that girls who have loved Oboreru Knife for the past 10 years aren’t ashamed of.”
