“My Love Story!!” Movie and Manga Collaborate; Manga Front Cover Art Completely Replicates Movie Poster

The movie My Love Story!! will have its opening day in theaters Japan-wide on Oct. 31. A dream-like collaboration between the live-action movie and original manga has also been realized. The movie poster shares its layout with the front cover art from volume 10 of the tankobon volumes of the original manga. When placed side by side, just a glance is all it takes to see how perfectly the artwork replicates the poster.

Though a shojo manga, the main character of My Love Story!! is Takeo Goda, a burly male who stands 2 meters tall and weighs 120 kilograms, and it is because of this that the series has picked up attention from not just female readers but males as well. Playing Goda in the live-action movie is Ryohei Suzuki who will give an enthusiastic performance as the slightly sultry yet chivalrous character.

The released movie poster puts all the focus on Goda, and the cover art of the tankobon volume of the original manga was completed based on it. It’s rare for an original work to replicate a poster for its movie counterpart. Original series illustrator Aruko has also given the movie’s close reproduction of the manga his stamp of approval, saying, “This was completed in the reverse pattern of ‘live-action’ → ‘manga’. The facial expression of the movie version of Goda is spot on!”

Similarly to the poster, the background of the cover art also features Rinko Yamato played by Mei Nagano and Makoto Sunakawa played by Kentaro Sakaguchi. This collaboration is a must-see even down to the tiny details.

Volume 10 of the My Love Story!! manga will be released on Oct. 13. Beginning Oct. 3, movie theaters in Japan to screen the movie will also begin distributing a trial version of the manga in the form of a booklet that uses this collaboration artwork.

The original manga My Love Story!!* was created by Kazune Kawahara and illustrated by Aruko, and has been serialized in Shueisha’s Bessatsu Margaret since 2012. Over 4.1 million copies of the tankobon volumes are in print. A TV anime adaptation of the manga began broadcasting earlier this April. It’s final episode, episode 24: “My Heart,” will be broadcast on Sept. 24.
