Ume Aoki Exhibition Coming to Mori Art Museum in Ueno; New Illustrations to Be on Display

Ume Aoki will hold her first solo exhibit this fall at the Mori Art Museum in Ueno, Tokyo. The “Ume Aoki Exhibition” will run for 10 days, from Oct. 3–12.

Ume Aoki’s masterpiece is Hidamari Sketch, and in it are her lovely artworks. The character visuals she created while character designer on the anime Madoka Magica were a hit too for contrasting unexpectedly with the story.

Ume Aoki began her doujin activities while in middle school, and in 2004 her work Hidamari Sketch began being serialized in Houbunsha’s Manga Time Kirara Carat. In 2011, she was in charge of character designs on Madoka Magica. Along with her noticeable activities in the industry, she also continues her doujin activities as well and organizes the group Apricot+.

The “Ume Aoki Exhibition” will introduce manuscripts, illustrations, and more from the wide activities of Aoki as both a manga artist and illustrator. Also included will be countless newly released materials, design sketches, and artwork created just for the exhibit.

Design sketches and production materials will be on display in the “World of Hidamari Sketch” area, which will also feature an art gallery in main character Yuno’s room in addition to manga manuscripts, a material book made public for the first time, and memo writings. Attendees will be able to enter Yuno’s room where she watched nothing but anime and read nothing but manga. Moreover, there will be a variety of plans to excite attendees including “Yuno’s Artist Song” thought up by Aoki being made public.

The Madoka Magica area will feature a mix of Aoki’s impressions and behind-the-scenes stories, through which will be explained how she was able to create such characters. It seems it will give attendees a feel for how she incorporates emotion into her designs.

There will also be an area that recreates Aoki’s work environment, and which looks back at the various works she has created to date, beginning with a video showing the making of artwork drawn specifically for the exhibit. Because a variety of her favorite works will also be on display, including works from her childhood and before her debut, is seems her unknown roots will be revealed.

Ume Aoki will also attend the exhibit for a drawing event and a signing event too. The exhibit will also have exclusive goods and an audible guided tour. Details will be posted to the official site once they are determined.

Attendance to the “Ume Aoki Exhibition” will cost 1,000 yen for the general public and college students, and 600 yen for middle school students. Advance tickets will be offered at at 100-yen discount. These will be on sale through Ticket Pia until the day before the event.
