Akagi Live-Action TV Drama Announced; Broadcasts Begin in July on BS Sky PerfecTV!

Akagi - Yami ni Oritatta Tensai live-action drama announced. The drama will air on BS Sky PerfecTV as their third original drama series from 9 p.m. on Friday, July 17.

Akagi - Yami ni Oritatta Tensai is a manga written by Nobuyuki Fukumoto, author of Tobaku Mokushiroku Kaiji and Saikyou Densetsu Kurosawa, and published in Kindai Mahjong. Running since 1992, there are currently 29 volumes on sale. The series is a spin-off of Fukumoto’s Ten: Tenhodori no Kaidanji, published in Kindai Mahjong Gold from 1989 to 2002 in which the protagonist, Shigeru Akagi, also appears. In 2005 Akagi was broadcast as a 26-episode TV anime. Games and merchandise were developed too as well as two live-action V-Cinema movies.

Hitoshi Iwamoto who worked on Hakusen Nagashi and Nurse no Oshigoto, and Mitsuru Kubota of Koumyou ga Tsuji and Saitou-san, will direct and produce the drama series. Mitsuru Tanabe (*Hero*, Kyumei Byoto) will write the scripts. The main title song has also been announced as Shonan no Kaze’s “Don’t Be Afraid.”

The drama will adapt all 10 chapters of the long-running Washizu Mahjong arc. The broadcasts will begin from July 17 and you’ll be able to watch the first episode for free. Expectations are mounting for the live action Akagi after the live action Kaiji. Cast details are due to be announced soon - you don’t want to let that information slip by you!
