Level-5, which is known for Youkai Watch, Inazuma Eleven, and other hit series, is branching out into a new realm. Level-5’s original spirit horror RPG Ushiro has become a light novel series published by Kadokawa and Fields. The novel, titled Ushiro: Fukigen na Shinigami, began publication though Kadokawa Horror Bunko on Sept. 25. Released at the same time was a digital copy of the novel available on the ebook service Book Walker. The novel has been released to the world as a large-scale title.
Ushiro, the original work to Ushiro: Fukigen na Shinigami, is a spirit horror RPG announced by Level-5 for the PSP in 2008. Though the game was eventually scrapped, interest in it is still high due to it being a title created by hitmakers. Now, the game is being depicted in novel form. For the novel, a new-generation god of death story has been developed that is set in the world of the spirit horror RPG Ushiro. The characters of the story include Ushiro aka Reiichiro Ushiro, a god of death who captures the souls of those who have died using mysterious tools and abilities, and Nanako Nishizaki, a high school girl who doesn’t want anyone to die. Reiichiro carries out his duties as a god of death by sniffing out life that has been exhausted and snatching away the souls of humans. On the other hand, Nanako is a first-year high school student who has a positive and bright personality. Due to certain circumstances, Nanako becomes bound by a contract behind her back. What develops is a spirit fantasy that focuses on their bizarre servant-master relationship.
The novel is edited by Kadokawa Horror Bunko, which has an established reputation for its many talked-about horror novels released to date. Also, the novel is written by Liu Goto whose representative works include Seija ga Koroshi ni Yattekuru and Illegal Technica and whose novel works include Mobile Suit Gundam Seed and Sadako 3D 2 - Saitan. Volume 2 will release in January 2015.
Kadokawa and Fields cooperation won’t stop at just the novel; various other media developments are planned from here on. Level-5 will also continue its cooperation with Kadokawa and Fields into the future.
