The Inside Story of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time Will Be Told at the Tokyo National Museum by Producers Takashi Watanabe and Yuichiro Saito

Anime director Mamoru Hosoda is a hitmaker who time and time again has given the world popular movies including Wolf Children and Summer Wars. However, the starting point to all of this is the 2006 theatrically released movie The Girl Who Leapt Through Time.

Based on a sci-fi novel by Yasutaka Tsutsui, the movie had much smaller success than Wolf Children and Summer Wars, making just 260 million yen at the box office. However, its popularity exploded due to word of mouth by fans who saw it during its 20-theater release, and it became a hit. The movie conveys to the world director Hosoda’s identity as an artist.

It has been decided that the anime The Girl Who Leapt Through Time will be screened at the Tokyo National Museum, which also appears in the movie. The event will be part of the museum’s “Outdoor Cinema at the Museum” program. Screenings will occur in front of the main building of the Tokyo National Museum on Oct. 10 and 11 at 7 p.m. A gigantic screen will be set up at the venue. The idea behind this is to enjoy a masterpiece anime in a place overflowing with the sense of an autumn evening.

In the movie, the Tokyo National Museum shows up all over the place, as the main character’s aunt works there. Because of this connection, it was chosen for the first “Outdoor Cinema at the Museum.” On the day of the screenings, the hours of the museum will be extended until 10 p.m. There will also be an exhibit room to enjoy along with the movie. Admission to the event is free, but admission to the museum is required. Also, registering beforehand is not necessary and there is no guest limit. (In the event of rain, the screening will be held in the Heiseikan Auditorium. (first 380 people to arrive))

Moreover, before the screening on Oct. 10, a special talk show will be held. The topic will be the inside story of The Girl Who Leapt Through Time. Takashi Watanabe (producer at Kadokawa Shoten) and Yuichiro Saito (producer at Studio Chizu), along with a researcher from the museum, will discuss the story behind the movie’s production, the hardships in using the Tokyo National Museum, and more. Both Watanabe and Saito are producers who have supported director Mamoru Hosoda from The Girl Who Leapt Through Time to the present day. They will no doubt have valuable stories to tell. The event will begin at 6:30 p.m. and it too is free.
