The season for the Short Shorts Film Festival & Asia (SSFF & Asia) has come once again this year. SSFF & Asia 2014 will be be held in Omotesando, Harajuku, and Yokohama from May 30 to June 15. SSFF & Asia is known as a film festival that is officially recognized by the Academy Awards. It focuses on short films, and its scale has increased year after year.
It has been four years since the establishment of the CG animation category, so SSFF & Asia is a film festival that even those in animation industry can’t take their eyes off. With help from Digital Hollywood, the aim is to introduce in Japan the world’s top-level CG works, as well as dispatch world-level CG creators from Japan.
This year, 227 works from 31 countries make up the CG animation category. Twenty-two works from 11 countries will be screened, including Akai Ito which won second place in the Digital Hollywood school-wide contest Digital Frontier Grand Prix 2014. A special screening of the CG work Mr. Hublot, winner of this year’s Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, will also be held. It’s an interesting work set in a retro-futuristic world that follows the growth of a “dog” found by the main character.
The judges for the CG animation category are film directors Shinji Aramaki and Kazuaki Kiriya, and president of Digital Hollywood, Tomoyuki Sugiyama. The award winners will be announced at an awards ceremony to be held on June 9 at the AiiA Theater Tokyo in Shibuya. Keep an eye on these works that are excellent not just on the technical side, but also storywise and entertainmentwise as well as are enjoyable to both kids and adults.
