The movie for Space Pirate Captain Harlock was released in theaters on Sept. 7 Japan-wide. It is also gathering attention for being highly praised by James Cameron, who is currently working on the sequel to Avatar.

After watching the 2D version this spring, Cameron commented, “This movie is unprecedented; it has already become a legend.”. He also expressed his longing to see the 3D version in a private showing: “When the 3D version is complete, I want to watch it.” This time, director Shinji Aramaki went to the U.S. in person, and the two met for the first time. Cameron watched the 3D version in his own studio and talked about his impressions.

Aramaki flew to America right after finishing the stage greetings on the premiere date, visited Cameron’s studio, and firmly shook the director’s hand. Although they met for the first time, they both seemed to have prior knowledge of one another. Aramaki was deeply impressed with Cameron, saying, “I thought that me knowing him was unilateral, but when I handed him my presents, DVDs of my previous works, he said, ‘I’ve seen this. And this, too.’ I was so happy to learn that he had watched most of my works.”

After the end of the private showing, Cameron held out his hand to Aramaki with great admiration: “This is wonderful. Congratulations.” He praised it with words such as “visually poetic” and “majestic,” and he expressed his excitement toward the film. He also recommended it to his own production company, Lightstorm Entertainment.

When Aramaki told Cameron, “If I can be of any help, please let me know,” he replied, “It is me who wants to be of help.” Their words were a show of their mutual respect for one another. Aramaki went on to say, “Working together would be a dream come true,” giving the premonition of a new collaboration.

Producer Yoshiyuki Ikezawa has also given hints about an international premiere of Captain Harlock: “Although the details are not yet fixed, we have talked about the overseas expansion of Captain Harlock, so be ready.”

The movie has already received screening offers from 78 countries and regions, and these contracts are being concluded. It is likely to create a sensation not only in Japan, but other countries as well.
