The Next Generation: Patlabor*, a project comprised of 12 episodes across 7 chapters spearheaded by Mamoru Oshii, is gaining attention from fans due to the consecutively released episodes loaded with personality.
On July 12, Part 3 of the project, Episode 4 “Stray Dog Afternoon” and Episode 5 “A Large Kauju Appears: First Half,” began screening in theaters. In “Stray Dog Afternoon,” members of the Second Special Vehicles Division become captured by a convenience store thief, and “A Large Kauju Appears: First Half” features a kaiju rampaging through Atami.
Now, a video from the currently screening “Stray Dog Afternoon” has been made public. In one interesting scene, a moving Ingram is fully depicted. However, its appearance is slightly different. The Ingram appears in a scene in which the members of the Second Special Vehicles Division captured by the convenience store thief are rescued. Though the Ingram moves by itself via remote control, such action is dangerous due to possible power shortages and pilot Harao Ota’s lack of skill. However, its appearance and composition is similar to something seen before. It looks like it will go berserk at any moment. Furthermore, when it finally takes out its revolver cannon, it is sprayed with machine gun fire from the armed criminal. It seems the movie is right in line with the Patlabor universe.
In addition to this, The Next Generation: Patlabor is brimming with scenes that pay homage to masterpiece films. There are even many scenes that bring to mind past tokusatsu films in “A Large Kaiju Appears.” There is no doubt that these movies will have movie fans and anime fans grinning from ear to ear.
