The broadcast of the TV anime Tokyo Ghoul will begin on Tokyo MX and other networks in July. This dark fantasy anime is an adaptation of a manga series of the same name by Sui Ishida that is currently serialized in Weekly Young Jump (Shueisha). Set in a Tokyo in which live human-eating ghouls, the story develops around the intermingling of ghouls and humans. Directing the anime is Shuhei Morita who was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2013 for his short film “Possessions.” A point of interest is how he will depict the dark world of Tokyo Ghouls.
Visuals of the three main characters have been released. These are Ken Kaneki, a normal college student who loves to read, and two female characters: Toka Kirishima, the story’s heroine, and Rize Kamishiro who is deeply connected to Kaneki’s fate. Each of the released visuals have a refreshing feel… Whether this comes through in the anime is a point to pay attention to.
Also announced is the voice cast for these three characters. Playing Ken Kaneki is Natsuki Hanae, playing Toka Kirishima is Sora Amamiya, and playing Rize Kamishiro is Kana Hanazawa. The lineup is full of popular seiyū. Though their characters aren’t shown in the visuals, the cast also includes Mamoru Miyano, Takayuki Sugo, Sumire Morohoshi, Katsuyuki Konishi, Yuichi Nakamura, Toshiyuki Toyonaga, Shintaro Asanuma, and Takahiro Sakurai. It seems this is a work that seiyū fans won’t be able to take their eyes off of.
Tokyo Ghoul began serialization in 2011, and 11 volumes have released thus far. The popular series has over 3.5 million copies in print. In addition to Shuhei Morita directing, playwright and producer Chuji Mikasano is in charge of the series composition and script. This is a melding of unique talent. Producing the anime is Studio Pierrot.
