Knights of Sidonia is a TV anime broadcast from April to June of this year, and its CG techniques have been praised on an international stage. The anime has now been chosen for Asia’s largest CG festival, SIGGRAPH Asia 2014, and will be screened at the Electronic Theater.

Knights of Sidonia is a fully digital animation produced by Polygon Pictures based on a sci-fi manga by Tsutomu Nihei. The series has gathered attention for its use of the newest CG and new forms of expression. The series, which was broadcast for three months starting in April of this year, is highly praised not just for its CG, but also for its entertainment value. Production on the second season titled Knights of Sidonia: War on the Ninth Planet has already been announced. The series will likely kick-start SIGGRAPH Asia 2014.

Every year at the Computer Animation Festival held during SIGGRAPH Asia, works are chosen from close to 500 entries from around the world, and the particularly special works from among those are screened in the Electronic Treater. Regarding this year’s selection, producer Kenji Ishimaru of Polygon Pictures, a production company that creates animation, commented, “Works screened in the Electronic Theater are judged on not just creativity, but also technical power, flow, and having universal content, so I’m very honored that Knights of Sidonia, a work created in celebration of Polygon Picture’s 30th anniversary, was selected.”

Polygon Pictures has won many awards in its history, including a Daytime Emmy for Transformers Prime and Star Wars: The Clone Wars, and an Annie Award for Tron: Uprising. The fact that Knights of Sidonia will be screened in the Electronic Theater is proof once again of the company’s high technical abilities.

Starting this year, Polygon Pictures is also producing anime domestically in Japan. Currently broadcasting is director Goro Miyazaki’s Ronia the Robber’s Daughter. From here, the company will be assertive in its strides to expand content created in Japan overseas, and has revealed its plan to distribute works worldwide.
