Yōichi Takahashi’s manga Captain Tsubasa is collaborating with Japan’s pro soccer league, J. League. The work has played a large role in the popularity of soccer in Japan, especially among fans of J. League, and is causing a boom in Japan’s soccer scene. The first part of the collaboration was recently announced. Pro athletes recreated the sure-hit shot that is used in the series. Distribution of the PV titled “J. League × Captain Tsubasa Dream Shoot” has begun.
“J. League × Captain Tsubasa Dream Shoot” is a project in which J. League players challenge themselves with the characteristic, showy shot from Captain Tsubasa and recreate it with their high-level pro skills. The first video shows Kōsuke Ota of FC Tokyo challenging himself with Makoto Sōda’s sure-hit shot “Razor Shoot.” This video of the shooting scene admired by soccer fans worldwide being splendidly recreated is a must-see.
After seeing the PV, Yōichi Takahashi voiced his surprise by saying, “Amazing! As expected of the J. League. He captured the Razor Shoot the way I had imagined it.” There are hopes for even more projects from here on.
J. League Chairman Mitsuru Murai also commented, “What an amazing shot by Ota!” He also discussed further developments: “Up until now, Captain Tsubasa has given many children dreams. As one catalyst of this, the J. League as well is making efforts to be able to bestow many more dreams and gratitude through this collaboration.”
Captain Tsubasa began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump (Shueisha) in 1981 and has become a huge hit work with many fans not just in Japan, but worldwide. Because 2014 is also the year of the FIFA World Cup, the “Captain Tsubasa Dream Project 2014” was also launched in order to convey through Captain Tsubasa the importance of chasing after your dreams. The “J. League × Captain Tsubasa Dream Shoot” is one part of this project. Preparations are also being made for the “Captain Tsubasa Exhibit” to be held in June. It seems likely that a huge upsurge will be seen for the monumental soccer manga Captain Tsubasa along with the World Cup.
