It has been announced that the TV anime Tonari no Seki-kun will begin broadcasting in January 2014. The original manga for Tonari no Seki-kun, created by Takuma Morishige, is currently serialized in Monthly Comic Flapper (Media Factory). Being a popular manga with more than 1.6 million copies in print, anticipation among fans has been building for information on the anime adaptation. Now, information is being released bit by bit on this talked-about work. First to be released is a visual of the anime.

The first visual shows a heap of random items on top of Seki-kun’s desk. The illustration skillfully expresses the original work, which is known as “Japan’s only manga about slacking off in class.” It will be interesting to see how the two main characters’ silent back and forth struggles will be depicted in the anime.

The anime is being worked on by Shin-Ei Animation, the same company behind the anime for Doraemon. We look forward to this long-standing production company that has worked on many anime over the years to once again show its ability here. Directing the anime is Yuji Mutō of Crayon Shin-chan and Ultimate Girls fame. Masae Ōtake of Kuromajo-san ga Tōru!! fame has been appointed to the role of character designer. Additional information on the anime including the cast and broadcast networks will be announced on the official site soon.

One additional piece of information that has already been announced is the plan to distribute the anime online. On top of the TV broadcast, it seems that fans just about everywhere will be able to enjoy the anime.

Tonari no Seki-kun is a comedy that follows Rumi Yokoi, who on a daily basis is witness to Seki-kun, a boy who sits next to her, and the wacky games he plays on his desk while slacking off during class, all somehow without the teacher noticing. The work has picked up popularity for Seki-kun’s unique and always unexpected behavior. The manga began serialization in 2010, and four volumes have been released so far. It has also been highly praised, having won several awards including the Manga Award 2012 and placing high on various rankings.
