Beginning on June 22, Ghost in the Shell: Arise - Border:1 Ghost Pain began a limited two-week screening in 20 theaters throughout Japan, continuing the legacy of the series. Even before the screenings ended, box office earnings for the movie surpassed 100 million yen with more than 80,000 tickets sold. In the movie’s opening weekend, it raked in box office earnings of 36 million yen with more than 30,000 people seeing the movie. This momentum only improved as the limited screenings continued.
At just under an hour in length, Ghost Pain is considered a short work to be screened in theaters. Tickets for the movie cost a uniform 1,200 yen across theaters, and there was even an additional special charge. Even with this, it can be said that crossing over such a large amount of earnings is record breakings. The last screenings were held on July 5 and also seemed to lengthen this record even more. Also, it has already been decided to screen the movie internationally in France, North America, Germany, Australia, Taiwan, and more. This development is due to the series’ high international popularity.
