On June 22, the first part in the tetralogy Ghost in the Shell: Arise, Border 1: Ghost Pain, will finally release in theaters throughout Japan. The ambitious work is a new take on Ghost in the Shell, but it will convey a story about the birth of Section 9 which has not been told thus far and which fans will not want to miss.
Before the first part in this newest work begins screening, fans are now able to see the first eight minutes for free online. This special preview was first uploaded to the movie’s official YouTube channel and other sites on June 14. It is a great opportunity for fans who will be able to see it in theaters to check it out ahead of time and get even more excited for its release.
It has also been decided that this movie will be distributed online in its entirety for a fee. This will be implemented the same day the movie releases in theaters.
This plan is being carried out to synchronize the movie’s release in theaters as well as online and the selling of the Blu-ray version, which will go on sale in advance in theaters.
This limited edition theater version Blu-ray will cost 8,000 yen (tax included) and will include a scenario and the unedited film. The regular release date for the Blu-ray and DVD is July 28, and they will cost 7,140 yen and 6,090 yen, respectively (both prices include tax).
The regular edition of the film will include bonuses such as a special full-color booklet and a newly created 3DCG short anime called “Rojikoma Beat.” It will also come with a jacket and sleeve case specially drawn by Kazuchika Kise.
Ghost in the Shell: Arise is an original work by Masamune Shirow. Kise is acting as both director and character designer on the film. A wonderful formation of other staff has been assembled for this newest work in the Ghost in the Shell series, including Tow Ubukata as series composer and scriptwriter and Cornelius as music director.
Kise has been in charge of direction and character designing on other Production I.G works as well, including Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence. Ubukata is active as a sci-fi writer, having created such works as Mardock Scramble and Chevalier: Le Chevalier D'Eon. Cornelius is widely active as a remixer, producer, and collaborator, having worked with various artists both domestic and abroad as part of Keigo Oyamada’s solo project.
Ghost in the Shell: Arise will give a backstory into the world of Ghost in the Shell, taking place before Kusanagi Motoko is promoted to major. Each film is roughly 50 minutes in length, and the series is broken into four parts.
Those who see the film in theaters will receive a 96-page book called “Ghost in the Shell: Arise Manual Book.” What the contents of this book will be is still unknown.
