On July 6, the broadcast for the TV anime Genshiken: Second Season will begin. The anime is a long-awaited work based on the manga by Shimoku Kio. The manga for Genshiken began serialization in 2002 in Monthly Afternoon and is currently being continued in Genshiken: Second Season. The work is a big hit, with more than 4 million copies of the individual volumes of Genshiken and Genshiken: Second Season in print.
The story depicts the activities of a college circle called the Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture who enjoy anime, manga, light novels, games, and more, and it has struck a chord with many fans. The work has had two prior anime adaptations, one in 2004 and one in 2007. These also gained great popularity. Since it has been so long since the last TV anime, the production studio and cast for the new anime are completely different. Take note as this reboot comes alive this year.
The staff for the anime includes Tsutomu Mizushima, a hitmaker whose past works include Girls und Panzer and Squid Girl, as director and Michiko Yokote as series composer. Lining up for the cast are Nozomi Yamamoto as Ogiue Chika, Sumire Uesaka as Yoshitake Rika, and Yumi Urayama as Yajima Mirei.
Before the broadcast begins, an advance screening event of the first episode will be held on June 29 in Akihabara, Tokyo. The cast will be present at the event and Uesaka will sing the opening theme song.
