Last month, the television broadcast for the anime Star Blazers 2199 (known in Japan as Space Battleship Yamato 2199) began throughout Japan. The series has been considered extremely influential in the world of anime. The broadcast of the series’ new work comes 33 years after the original work and delivers a fresh charm for both young and well-seasoned anime fans.
Fans have also been able to see the much talked about anime slightly earlier than its TV broadcast in theaters. Since April 2012, episodes of the anime have been screened in theaters as films. Blu-ray and DVD releases also followed. Recently, the trend of television anime being screened in theaters has obtained favorable recognition. Last month, the fifth of the total seven parts to the series began screening in 12 theaters throughout Japan. It features the heroic battle between General Domel and Yamato. The fifth film comprises four episodes of the anime and runs approximately 100 minutes in total.
The theater release dates and respective Blu-ray and DVD release dates for the sixth and seventh films have also been announced. The sixth film, titled Toutatsu! Dai Magellan, and the seventh film, the title to which has not yet been determined, will release in theaters on June 15 and Aug. 24, respectively. The films released so far have become big hits alongside the television broadcast.
The seventh and final film will include episodes 23-26. Fans can experience the final chapter of Star Blazers 2199 while cooling off in theaters during Japan’s hot summer. Fans can pick up their copies of the fifth, sixth, and final films on Blu-ray or DVD on May 28, July 26, and Sept. 25, respectively.
