On Feb. 11, 2013, the 64th Sapporo Snow Festival ended on a grand note. The huge winter week-long event is held yearly in Japan, and every year new efforts are made to reflect the current trends.

This year, the festival featured a new event called “Snow Sculpture Projection Mapping”. Projection mapping is the technique of projecting virtual images onto real-life backgrounds, such as buildings, to create amazing illusion art. In this case, it was used to create beautiful and wondrous animations on snow sculptures. In recent years, both in Japan and abroad, projection mapping has become quite the fad, with many artists trying their hand at this cutting-edge art form.

Popular Disney and anime characters are often chosen for projection mapping. Among the popular characters, one that has caught attention is Snow Miku. Every Snow Miku sculpture is made different, and even after the Snow Festival has ended, they remain popular on the internet.

We look forward to seeing what next year’s Snow Festival will feature!
