On Dec. 1, 2012 at Cine Libre Ikebukuro, the opening day stage greetings for Yanase Takashi Theater took place. The film is made up of one animated film called Hal’s Flute, one animated short called Robo-kun and the Little Bird and one animated musical short called The Day Anpanman Was Born. All three films are wonderful and make Yanase Takashi Theater a lovely three-film compilation. Voice actress Masako Nozawa took to the podium for the stage greetings together with Yanase Usagi and Anpanman. The theater was filled with Anpanman adoring children and their parents.
Masako Nozawa is known for having voiced many male characters, most notably Goku and Gohan from Dragon Ball, as well as Kitaro from GeGeGe no Kitaro and Tetsuro Hoshino from Galaxy Express 999. In Hal’s Flute, Nozawa plays Hal, a forest Tanuki that can transform into a human with the help of a leaf.
The story begins when Hal finds an abandoned human baby in the forest. Out of adoration, Hal chooses to turn into a human mother to give the utmost care to the human baby, whom she chooses to name Pal. Pal cherishes his mother and grows into being a young man very quickly. One day, while Pal is making music with the leaf that was given to him by his mother, his musical ability is noticed by a famous musician named Chocopan, who happens to be passing by. Pal then decides to study music and he rushes out alone into the city. Even though Hal is worried for Pal, Hal decides that if it is too hard for Pal and he ends up returning home, she will still welcome him with open arms and forever remain in human form to be his mother. These feelings eventually lead to a miracle.
Regarding the movie, Nozawa made the following comments:
Pal’s origin stems from a leaf. From a simple leaf, he begins to play music and develops into a splendid musician. From a parent’s viewpoint, it is of course important to "give" something to your children. However, this doesn’t mean only buying them things, but rather teaching them to appreciate what is around them in nature. Similar to the movie, you can make an impact even without money. I think this concept is important even today.
How should parents rear their children? What should they do and not do for their children? The flute's sound clearly communicates these themes to the audience and has the power to make them think of their loved ones. Parents and their children will enjoy this movie and enjoy talking about it afterwards. For those of you with children, be sure to share this wonderful movie with them!
