The name Rilakkuma is the combination of the Japanese transliteration of the English word relax, rirakkusu (リラックス), and the Japanese word for bear, kuma (熊). It’s no wonder Rilakkuma is so laidback and fond of lazing around! Produced by San-X and created by Aki Kondo, the mellow teddy bear first appeared in 2003 as an embodiment of Aki’s wish to have a pet and more relaxing life.
One day, Rilakkuma showed up in an apartment of an office lady named Kaoru and decided to make it his home, too! After making himself comfortable, he started snacking on her Japanese rice crackers. Even though her apartment is cramped and Rilakkuma makes a mess of it, Kaoru is happy for the humour and little annoyances he brings to her life. She even became skilled at making one of Rilakkuma’s favorite foods, omurice. His other favorite foods include strawberries, pancakes, dango, and custard pudding. While Kaoru is away, Rilakkuma enjoys soaking in the bath tub, watching TV shows about food and a DVD on hot springs, as well as kicking back on her yellow beanbag and listening to music while eating snacks. Doesn’t that sound relaxing?
Rilakkuma has a mysterious zipper on his back and blue polka dot material inside. He prefers it not be bothered. His lower body is a costume which he has to clean and replace periodically, but it’s unknown whether or not his head is also part of the costume. His friends include Kaoru’s bird Kiiroitori, Korilakkuma who also later appeared at Kaoru’s apartment, and Koguma-chan, a bear cub he met in a honey forest. ♡
