Hero of Hyrule, Hero of Time, Hero of Winds, Hero of the Skies, New Hero of Hyrule... Link, the iconic hero from the Legend of Zelda franchise, has gone by many names throughout the years, and now he’s got one more the add to the list: Tokyo Otaku Mode’s Character of the Week!
Did You Know?
- Link is named after the fact that he was the link between the past and the future during the development of the original Legend of Zelda game as originally the game was set to take place between these two timelines.
- Shigeru Miyamoto has stated that Link’s iconic green tunic and hat were inspired by Disney’s Peter Pan.
- Link is usually depicted left-handed other than in the Wii version of Twilight Princess where he is depicted as being right-handed because that’s how most players hold the Wiimote.
- The only time throughout the franchise that Link has any spoken dialogue other than grunts and gasps is twice in The Adventure of Link, once when he finds a mirror in Saria Town and says, “I found a mirror under the table,” and the other when he inspects a fireplace in the hidden town of Kasuto and says, “Looks like I can get in the fireplace.” (He’s also uncharacteristically chatty in the 1989 American Zelda cartoon in which his infamous catchphrase is “Excuuuuse me, Princess!” - but let’s just pretend that never happened ::cringe::)
- Link’s grave appears in Elfheim in the Japanese version of the original Final Fantasy game.
