Grimoire of Zero (Zero kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho) began as a light novel series written by Kakeru Kobashiri and illustrated by Yoshinori Shizuma that has been published by ASCII Media Works since 2014 and won the Grand Prize at the 20th annual Dengeki Novel Awards. The series has also been adapted into a manga of the same name illustrated by Takashi Iwasaki, a spin-off manga titled Zero kara Hajimeru Mahou no Sho Nano! written by Yasuoka, and an anime adaptation by studio White Fox that will air in 2017.
The series follows Zero, a haughty witch searching for a one-of-a-kind magical tome that contains the power to destroy the world called the Book of Zero which was stolen from her lair by bandits, and Mercenary, a kindhearted half-man half-beast who dreams of becoming fully human and joins Zero in her hunt for the Book of Zero after she promises to make him human upon finding it. Through their journey they meet Albus, a young magician who joins the group; Holdem, a womanizing beast who dresses in noble attire and has a frivolous tone; and Thirteen, a mysterious magician who covets the Book of Zero for himself and seems to be knowledgeable of it.
