An original mecha anime series created by Gainax and co-produced by Aniplex and Konami, Gurren Lagann is set in the future when Earth is ruled by the Spiral King, Lordgenome. Mankind now lives underground with some villagers conscripted as “diggers” to expand their territory downwards. One day meek digger Simon meets delinquent Kamina who asks him to join his gang, Team Gurren, which is working towards finally reaching the surface.
Shortly after Simon unearths the Core Drill and small face-shaped “Gunman” mecha, a huge Gunman crashes through from above and begins attacking the villagers. The Gunman is followed by a mysterious girl, Yoko, who attacks it before Simon activates the smaller Gunman, nicknamed Lagann, to take the invading mecha down.
Learning that humans on the surface are regularly attacked by Lordgenome’s Gunmen, Kamina hijacks a Gunman and calls it Lagann combining it with Gurren to create the Gurren Lagann mecha which then inspires others to join Team Gurren which is then expanded as Team Dai-Gurren and sets out to take down Lordgenome for good.
