FLCL is set to receive two movies, FLCL 2 and FLCL 3, both of which will premiere in 2018. A teaser visual also accompanied this huge announcement, which was made at Anime Expo in Los Angeles.
GAINAX is a massive name in Japanese animation, particularly for its classic anime Neon Genesis Evangelion. FLCL was born as the next GAINAX work, directed by Tsurumaki Kazuya and released as a 6-episode OVA series from 2000 to 2001.
While Tsurumaki won't be working as director this time, he'll still be active behind the scenes as a supervisor. Meanwhile, Motohiro Katsuyuki, who served as director for the TV anime series, will be directing the movie. Finally, Sadamoto Yoshiyuki will be continuing in his role as character designer, with Production I.G also back for animation work.
At Anime Expo, it was also revealed that alternative rock band the pillows will return to handle the musical score.
It'll be hard to wait for the 2018 premiere, with not only one but two awesome sequels to be released. Stay tuned for more updates!
