Rebuild of Evangelion Production Company Khara Celebrating 10th Anniversary!

Filmmaker Hideaki Anno, the creator of the Evangelion series, is the representative director of the planning and production company Khara, Inc., which celebrated its 10th anniversary in May 2016. Commemorating this, it will be holding its first exhibit titled the “Khara, Inc. 10th Anniversary Exhibit ~Evas from the Past & Future & the Present Studio Khara~” from Nov. 23-30 at Laforet Museum Harajuku.

It will feature the first displays for the Rebuild of Evangelion series including sketches, three models from Shin Godzilla (for which Hideaki Anno was a screenplay writer and director), as well as a screening of an extra volume of Insufficient Direction specially drawn by Moyoco Anno which was animated by Khara. There will also be a special screening of the music video for Hikaru Utada’s “Sakura Nagashi” from Evangelion 3.0 which was available for a limited time in September 2016, as well as sketches and materials from the Japan Animator Expo for a total of around 300 items.

Khara works on more than just animation, with their reach extending into the planning and production of live-action filmography, as well as distribution, advertising, animated special effects, and book publications. You’ll be able to see miniatures used for special effects at this exhibit, as well, allowing you to see another side of this company.

The below illustration based on Evangelion: 3.0 You Can (Not) Redo. was also specially prepared by chief animation director Takeshi Honda for this exhibit.

Hopefully fans will enjoy this exhibit while getting to see both Khara’s progress to this point, as well as its future goals.

・Display Featuring Khara’s Cultural Operations
Animation and special effects culture are preserved by Khara so that they can be inherited by the next generation. These include animation frames, backgrounds, raw materials, minis for special effects, and props, which have been sorted and organized. Damaged items are repaired and restored, and when possible, items are backed up using digital techniques. This is done with the hope of showing the value behind this through exhibits and publications in the future. Some of these precious materials will be on display at the exhibit.

・Screening of Studio Khara’s Animated Adaptation of Moyoco Anno’s Insufficient Direction Extra “Ooki na Kabu”
Mangaka Moyoco Anno is a company director of Khara and the wife of Hideaki Anno. She’s written a new volume of Insufficient Direction, and Khara has animated it for a special screening at this event. It will show the progress Khara has made since it was founded 10 years ago. The manuscript will also be on display.

“I’m Hideaki Anno, the representative director of Khara, Inc. Thanks to the support of all of our fans, our company has continued to grow over these past 10 years. It’s been a long time, but it’s passed in the blink of an eye. We will be holding an exhibit showing our 10 years of history, and I hope everyone will come enjoy it.

“Khara has only existed for 10 years, and I think it will continue for a long time. I hope that it will continue to create interesting works and provide a lot of service to animation and society, and I hope that we will continue to have your support. We’re all taking this opportunity to work harder than ever. I’d like to formally express my gratitude. Thank you for everything.”
