An original TV anime series inspired by Edogawa Ranpo’s classic Boy Detectives Club is to be broadcast by Tokyo MX, Yomiuri Telecasting Corporation and other stations from this October.

*Trickster* is an original anime TV series inspired by Edogawa Ranpo’s classic Boy Detectives Club but moves the action into the near future rather than the contemporary setting of the books.
The show has a wide range of characters beginning with Kobayashi who has become immortal thanks to a mysterious mist, and his partner, the leader of the Boy Detectives Club, Hanasaki. Set in the post Olympics Tokyo of the 2030s, Kobayashi and Hanasaki encounter the criminal of the century - The Fiend with Twenty Faces and the mysterious detective, Kogoro Akechi, thereby becoming caught up their various machinations.
TMS Entertainment is handling the animation with character design by PEACH-PIT of Rozen Maiden and Shugo Chara! fame. In conjunction with the announcement of the TV anime, a brand new illustration by PEACH-PIT has been released featuring the Shibuya backgrounds, as well as the first promotional video.
The manga adaptation of the show by Mantohihi Binta will also begin running in Magazine Special No. 7 from June 20. A stage show and live action movie are also in the planning in what looks to be a large-scale multimedia project.

“I was allowed to be involved right from the start so the characters came about after a lot of revisions until everyone was happy with them. The director and the crew as a whole were so passionate about the project, I really felt I learned so much from working with them. I was blown away once again by Mr. Yamada’s delicate line drawings and it was a fantastic opportunity to see characters we’d created moving with such vivid colours. Now we just have to wait to see how they behave, worry, grow. I’m so excited to find out what kind of adventures they’re going to have!”
Main Characters:
The leading role of Kobayashi will be played by Daiki Yamashita with Ryota Osaka playing Hanasaki.
Yoshio Kobayashi (14-year-old boy)
Kobayashi is a young boy who has developed an immortal body after being possessed by a “mysterious mist.” Unfortunately, this causes him to hurt people so he also has an extremely strong desire to commit suicide. He has a somewhat rebellious, sarcastic personality.
Comment from voice actor Daiki Yamashita:
“Kobayashi is a boy who’s carrying a weight heavier than just about anyone else. At first glance he may look pretty grown up but he still has a childish quality, and you feel as if you want to spoil him a little. In fact, he might actually be a little young for his age. I want to capture all of the various aspects that contribute to Kobayashi’s appeal.”
Kensuke Hanasaki (15-year-old boy)
At 8 years old, Hanasaki joined Akechi’s Boy Detectives Club. He’s the type who doesn’t so much think with his head as feel with his body, acting by instinct. He’s a very spontaneous kind of guy.
Comment from voice actor Ryota Osaka:
Fundamentally, Hanasaki is optimistic, but maybe he has something else going on too so I want to keep that in mind while playing him. Whatever happens I think he’s going to be a great character!”
Story
He chooses the path of the detective because he wants to die…
It’s the 2030s. The Boy Detectives Club has assembled under the mysterious detective Kogoro Akechi who guides them to the solution of various incidents large and small using their innate capabilities. One fateful day, Kensuke Hanasaki meets the mysterious boy Yoshio Kobayashi. Possessed by an “unknown mist,” Kobayashi has developed an immortal body but longs for nothing other than death and avoids contact with other people. Becoming interested in him, Hanasaki asks Kobayashi to join the detective club. Together their fates will become entwined with the criminal of the century, The Fiend with Twenty Faces, and with that of the mysterious detective Kogoro Akechi himself…
