Clip Studio Paint is a program for making illustrations, manga, and anime which is used by more than 1.5 million people all around the world (including users of the trial version). Apart from drawing and coloring tools including natural and real-looking pen tools and brush tools that allow for diverse painting styles, it comes with all sorts of functions covering the whole process of creating manga—be it black-and-white or color—as well as features for making moving illustrations and anime. It is available in Japanese, English, Chinese (traditional), French, and Spanish languages, and 45% of the software’s users are creators outside Japan.
Digital comics or webtoons are becoming increasingly popular in Korea with the webtoon market growing about 50% every year according to KT Economics & Management Research Institute. Popular webtoons often get movie or drama adaptations, and the worth of these related markets combined is estimated at around 1 trillion won. It is said that one out of three Koreans have read webtoons, and more than half of people in their 20s read webtoons daily (see KOCCA 2015 Third Quarter Contents Industry Report).
With the webtoon market going through such a boom, it’s no wonder the number of illustration and manga creators is on the rise. Most Clip Studio Paint is sold to Japan, followed by North America and Korea, so to accommodate Korean creators, Celsys released the Korean version of the software.
Webtoons are optimized for web browsing, being in full color and read in a vertical scrolling fashion. Clip Studio Paint also supports the making of this manga format.
