Synopsis
Undead creatures suddenly appear during the Industrial Revolution just as society is trying to push forward into the modern world. These creatures cannot be defeated unless the iron shell that protects their heart is pierced, and those bitten also rise again after death. These creatures are known as Kabane and their numbers grow so explosively that they soon begin to cover the surface of the Earth.

On the eastern island nation of Hinomoto, the inhabitants have built forts which they refer to as “stations” in order to protect themselves from the Kabane threat and have managed to hold out whilst closed safely away inside them. Only the armoured steam ships known as Hayajiro are able to move between the stations so that they can assist each other by trading the essentials for everyday life.

Ikoma is a young man working as a steamsmith at Aragane Station. Whilst developing his own weapon to combat the Kabane, the “piercing gun,” he waits and longs for the day when he can show off his own strengths.

One day, a Hayajiro breaks through the front lines and crashes into Aragane Station. Driven on by the cleanup team, Ikoma spots a mysterious girl let go from the Kabane inspection.

That night, Ikoma encounters the girl named Mumei once again while she is taking a nap, but Aragane is then overrun while the Hayajiro crisis continues. The crew members have been completely wiped out and turned into Kabane!

The Kabane quickly overwhelm Aragane Station leaving the populace engulfed in a wave of panic. Ikoma seizes his chance - he doesn’t want to run, this is the time to put his piercing gun to the test and take down some of the marauding Kabane. And so, Ikoma finally begins his battle to become a shining hero of the human race!
