Movie “Boku Dake ga Inai Machi” Slated for March 19, 2016 Release; Stars Tatsuya Fujiwara, Kasumi Arimura

Kei Sanbe’s manga Boku Dake ga Inai Machi serialized in Kadokawa’s Young Ace has given rise to a huge phenomenon since it started in 2012. The entertaining series is top notch for its heart-pounding suspense, mysteries, and the sci-fi flavor of time travel. A flood of more than 50 offers were made to get the rights to the movie.

The series made big headlines this fall with the successive announcements of a live-action movie adaptation and TV anime adaptation. The TV anime is being produced by A-1 Pictures and directed by Tomohiko Ito, and it will begin broadcasting in January during Fuji TV’s Noitamina programming block. The release date for the live-action movie was also finally announced on Nov. 24. It will be released Japan-wide on Saturday, March 19, 2016. The movie will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, and is likely to be a blockbuster hit of the spring 2016 season.

The story of Boku Dake ga Inai Machi is a mystery in which main character Satoru hunts for the truth of an unresolved incident he was involved in in the past. Satoru has a mysterious power called “Revival” that lets him relive the past, and using the power he prevents various incidents from happening.

Directing the movie is Yuichiro Hirakawa who won the Tokyo Drama Award 2015 Grand Prix for his work on The Emperor’s Cook, and attention is building over how the complicated timelines that bounce between the present and past will be portrayed for live action. Keep your eyes glued to find out what Hirakawa has in store for the movie.

Another point to highlight is the cast. Satoru who has a strange power and is chasing after the criminal in a serial kidnapping case of elementary school children that happened 18 years prior is being played by Tatsuya Fujiwara, a talented young actor who has a high reputation. And playing the heroine Airi Katagiri is Kasumi Arimura.

Along with the announced release date this time came the first revealed visual as well which shows Satoru and Airi running hand in hand. It almost seems like this scene in which they appear to be chasing someone symbolizes the conflict between these two and the murderer. With about four months until the movie’s release, fan anticipation is likely to continue to rise.
