“Bungo Stray Dogs” First Anime PV Posted; Features Atsushi Nakajima, Osamu Dazai & Ryunosuke Akutagawa

It has been announced that the TV anime Bungo Stray Dogs will begin broadcasting in 2016.
The series is a supernatural battle action story set in Yokohama that features well-known literary masters Atsushi Nakajima, Osamu Dazai, and Ryunosuke Akutagawa transformed into anime characters. The anime adaptation being greenlit has already caught massive buzz, and the first promotional video has been posted online. We finally get to see these interesting characters come to life. With background cuts from the PV also posted, anticipation is on the rise for the anime.

The PV was first shown at Animate Girls Festival held in Ikebukuro, Tokyo on Nov. 7 and 8. It has also since been uploaded to YouTube.

Bungo Stray Dogs is based on an action manga of the same name currently serialized in Kadokawa’s Young Ace. It is authored by Kafuka Asagiri and illustrated by Sango Harukawa. The series has momentum behind it and already has over 1.7 million copies of the tankobon volumes in print.

After being driven from an orphanage, a young Atsushi Nakajima saves a certain suicide enthusiast named Osamu Dazai and becomes a member of a group with supernatural abilities called the Armed Detective Agency. Before long, Atsushi’s supernatural power becomes evident and things intensify through confrontations with Ryunosuke Akutagawa, a member of the mafia, and the Guild, an American group with supernatural powers. The series is largely distinctive for its bold portrayals of real literary figures which draw out each character’s charms.

The PV is relatively short at 1 minute, 42 seconds, but in it we get to see Nakajima, Dazai, and Akutagawa in action. We also get a chance to hear the voices of the cast members playing each of the characters. Breathing life into the literary masters are cast members Yuto Uemura as Nakajima, Mamoru Miyano, Kensho Ono, Yoshimasa Hosoya, and Hiroshi Kamiya.

The anime’s staff includes director Takuya Igarashi and writer Yoji Enokido, the tag team behind Ouran High School Host Club and Star Driver. The animation is being produced by Bones. Watch the PV and you’re sure to get a sense of the world they are creating.

Excitement is also building for other developments in the series including novels and merchandise. Peculiar products are moving forward in development including a body mist collaboration with fragrance brand Fits. It seems it won’t be just the series but its merchandise too that will generate buzz.
