A new Neon Genesis Evangelion smartphone is born in 2015 - the year which marks the 20th anniversary of the franchise. Fans just can’t wait for the limited edition 7-Eleven smartphone with its 20th anniversary design plus wallpapers and other features.
The SIM free smartphone uses Android as its OS and is tied to the NTT Docomo network. 7-Eleven will begin accepting pre-order applications for the smartphone which is limited to 30,000 units only from Nov. 2.
The Anime!Anime! team got their hands on one of these sought-after Evangelion Smartphones right away and took a look at it ahead of time. Now they report to you.
First of all, the smartphone body itself: it has a limited edition 20th anniversary design with custom processing. Eva Unit-01 is the central theme, and the design reflects the machine’s color gradation. If you’re an Evangelion fan, you’re sure to be familiar with the color scheme.
The power and volume control side buttons are orange providing a colourful accent in the midst of the overall shading. The “EVANGELION 20th Anniversary” logo is printed on the case too which has uniform Eva Unit-01 color scheme with a cool mechanical atmosphere.
We tried to actually use it too. When you turn it on the startup noise sounds. The screen was filled with the Eva Unit-01 colours so if you like Eva Unit-01 you’re sure to love this. The power and reception gauges plus the mail and telephone icons are all Evangelion themed too. Even the wallpaper has a special design; there are so many individual gimmicks on display with the Evangelion smartphone.
The phones come equipped with the 365 EVA WALL app too and every day a new wallpaper will be added. There are nine different wallpapers right now, including an anime image and the episode one title logo. Just as the name suggests, the total of new daily designs is set to reach 365 in a year’s time. The wallpapers will also feature limited edition designs newly illustrated by Studio Khara animators, so they’re keenly awaited by fans.
The original EVA SOUND app is also worthy of attention as it comes with sound data including 21 types used in the theatrical movies plus 34 newly recorded clips from the most popular characters selected by survey. Sound effects used in the movies and newly recorded voice tracks from Rei Ayanami, Asuka Langley Soryu, and others are all included as call and mail notification sounds.
There are also “missions” included in the app. When you’ve cleared these missions, you’ll be able to use the sounds. There are quiz-style missions and various achievements you can unlock. Just hearing the sounds is fun in itself, but you’ll be wanting to complete the whole thing too.
The eagerly awaited Evangelion Smartphone retails for 84,240 yen (tax included). 7-Eleven which will shortly be accepting pre-orders for the phone is going overboard with Evangelion and also offering a bonus gift campaign and life-size figure sale too. The launch of the new Evangelion Smartphone looks to become quite a phenomenon!
