In time with the Evangelion-themed Sanyo Shinkansen bullet train 500 Type Eva beginning service, JR West and station bento merchant Awajiya have announced they will release on Nov. 7 a limited Evangelion bento. The bento costs 1,500 yen (including tax) and will be limited to only 50 available per day. It will be for sale at Awajiya stores inside Shin-Kobe Station and Nishi-Akashi Station.
Though the contents of the bento are still under review, it seems it will be harako-meshi (cooked rice topped with salmon and salmon roe) that represents an Angel core with salmon roe and is topped with salmon to convey the parent-child relationship at the heart of the Evangelion story. And because the container is ceramic, after you’re done eating the bento you can keep it as a commemorative souvenir.
The 500 Type Eva is a collaboration bullet train and part of the “Shinkansen: Evangelion Project” planned in commemoration of the 40th anniversary since the opening of Sanyo Shinkansen and the 20th anniversary since the TV anime Evangelion began broadcasting. The project is being supervised by Hideaki Anno and in charge of designing the train is mechanical designer Ikuto Yamashita. The train will begin service on Nov. 7 and run until March 2017. Commemorative travel items and collaboration products will also be available to buy inside the train.
