Animation researcher Nobuaki Doi has launched a distribution company called New Deer that introduces independent anime from throughout the world. Doi is known as a researcher and critic of primarily overseas anime. With his expertise, he has introduced countless overseas anime to Japan to date. He has launched New Deer to further this goal. The company will act as a distributor that aims to further diversify the world of anime.
The company will also be holding an international anime festival titled Georama 2016 as its launch event in Tokyo in February 2016. The aim of Georama will be to “convey the world’s current anime scene.” The event will continue from Georama 2014, which Doi held at Kichijoji Baus Theater just before the building was demolished.
Three of America’s current top anime creators—Bruce Bickford, Don Hertzfeldt, and David OReilly—will travel to Japan to attend Georama 2016. The highlights of the event include special screenings and events. The special feature “Channeling with Mr. Bickford” will be a unique event that features curator Naohiro Ukawa and collaborations between clay animator Bickford and famous musicians from Japan. Going on at the same time will also be an exhibit titled “Bruce Bickford’s Garage” that features a recreation of Bickford’s house in Seattle.
Also, Hertzfeldt will hold a Japan version of an event about his work that traveled all over the U.S., “An Evening with Don Hertzfeldt.” The event will feature screenings of his masterpieces including his latest work World of Tomorrow, winner of over 25 international awards including a double win at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival for the Special Prize and Audience Award.
Furthermore, OReilly, known for creating the anime part in director Spike Jones’ movie Her among other things, will also hold an event, and in addition there are also plans to feature Japanese creators at Georama 2016 during an event titled “Metamorphosis.”
A screening lineup and more details on the event will be posted from November onward on the Georama 2016 official site.
