Unique Atsushi Nakajima & Osamu Dazai Supernatural Battle Manga “Bungou Stray Dogs” To Be Adapted as a TV Anime by Bones

Bungou Stray Dogs, a unique manga written by Kafuka Asagiri and illustrated by Harukawa 35 which is currently running in Kadokawa Comics Ace is to become a TV anime. The production of the anime series will be handled by Bones with Takuya Igarashi as director and Yoji Enokido writing the script. They’re a real dream team who’ve delivered into the world such highly praised projects as Ouran High School Host Club and Star Driver among many others, so expectations are high for this new anime adaptation too.

However, additional information including what kind of animation, release date and time, cast and music remain unclear. This is only the first piece of news regarding the announcement of the anime adaptation.

Bungou Stray Dogs began publication in 2013 so it’s not a particularly long-running series, but as of the seventh of the already published tankobon volumes the series has sold over 1.7 million copies. The reason for its high sales figures is down to the strength of support from its readers. The latest edition, volume 8, is due to be released on Sept. 4, and the series is expected to surge with this surprise announcement. Along with the anime adaptation, a commemorative illustration by Harukawa 35 has also been unveiled which perfectly captures the series’ distinctive atmosphere.

The setting for the series is a little unusual. The action takes place in a fictional city in Yokohama, and the characters each share a name with modern Japanese literary giants. Also the characters' backgrounds and stories are connected with famous authors - e.g. Osamu Dazai is suicidal and Doppo Kunikida has a nervous disposition. However, what has been detailed are the activities of the employees of the “Armed Detective Agency” the guys belong to. The Armed Detective Agency is rumoured to solve incidents which neither the police nor army are able to resolve. With Atsushi Nakajima at the centre, the guys’ supernatural power battles unfold.
How on Earth are they going to animate this? Further news is eagerly awaited!
