This October, a new TV anime full of musical characters will begin broadcasting in Japan: High School Star Musical!
High School Star Musical, also known as StaMu or SutaMyu, takes place in Ayanaga Academy, a distinguished high school that specializes in musical performance. It follows the story of its young students as they try to become the next big musical star. The protagonist Yuta Hoshitani, along with his classmates Toru Nayuki, Kaito Tsukigami, Shou Tengenji, and Shuu Kuga, all try to join the elite musical group Kao Kai after being scouted by one of the group’s members, Otori. From there an exciting and musical tale of youth begins!
The musical elements, characters, and all-star cast for this anime are attracting a lot of attention. First of all, the protagonist Yuta Hoshitani will be voiced by Natsuki Hanae. The rest of the Team Otori members include big name voice talent as well, with Kensho Ono as Toru Nayuki, Arthur Lounsbery as Kaito Tsukigami, Yoshimasa Hosoya as Shou Tengenji, and Tomoaki Maeno as Shuu Kuga. More notable cast members include Nobuhiko Okamoto, Yuuma Uchida, Kazuyuki Okitsu, Yoshitsugu Matsuoka, Junichi Suwabe, and Daisuke Hirasawa.
With such a colorful cast list and group of characters, it’s difficult to tell exactly where this original anime story will go. We’ll just have to wait until the start date to find out!
Fans have been looking forward to the start of this series, and on Aug. 14 the main opening and ending themes were announced. The opening song called "Dreamer" will be performed by Gero. The song will apparently feature a different sound for the artist. Gero has gained popularity in recent years for providing the anime songs for such series as Brothers Conflict and Tokyo Ravens. This fall he will face a challenging new sound with “Dreamer." The single will be released on Oct. 21, and the First Release Edition will include an exclusive DVD containing the music video and making-of footage.
The ending theme, "Seishun Countdown," will be performed by Team Otori. You probably haven’t heard of this group before. That’s because it’s the name of the musical group consisting of the five main characters from the series. The theme will be sung by Yuta Hoshitani (voiced by Natsuki Hanae), Toru Nayuki (voiced by Kensho Ono), Kaito Tsukigami (voiced by Arthur Lounsbery), Shou Tengenji (voiced by Yoshimasa Hosoya), and Shuu Kuga (voiced by Tomoaki Maeno). Along with the anime itself, this group of all-star voice talent is also sure to attract a lot of attention.
