Surpassing 4.65 Billion Yen in Box Office Sales, “The Boy and the Beast” Exhibit Also Planned In Osaka

Since July 24, the “The Boy and the Beast Exhibit” at Shibuya Hikarie in Tokyo has been a huge success. By Aug. 16, 24 days after it opened, over 50,000 people had visited. Continuing from that exhibit in Shibuya, it will tour to Osaka where it will be held at the Daimaru Museum in Daimaru Umeda from Sept. 16–28. It’s wonderful news for fans in Kansai of the director, Mamoru Hosoda.

This “The Boy and the Beast Exhibit” introduces the worlds from the four works by anime director Mamoru Hosoda. It reveals production secrets from 2006’s The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, 2009’s Summer Wars, 2012’s Wolf Children, and the currently screening The Boy and the Beast. It also follows Mamoru Hosoda’s methods and position as a current hitmaker.

In The Boy and the Beast, a young boy grows up as he experiences many encounters and adventures while getting caught up in a strange world. Various bonds are drawn, and it’s becoming the big hit of this summer. On Aug. 16, as the 37th day since its opening, 3.65 million people had seen it, and its box office revenue even reached over 4.65 billion yen. It surpassed the previous work, Wolf Children, which earned 4.22 billion yen and had 3.44 million attendees.

The exhibition has a theme of “See - Learn - Play!” Among the highlights, there are over 300 items on display including things like storyboards, layouts, key frames, and background art picked out as anime subjects from the four works. Attendees will get an idea of how these four hit works came to be.

Additionally, works about personal experiences will also be on display. You’ll be able to learn about the anime worlds in an entertaining way. The original goods and event-exclusive goods only being sold at the exhibit are popular as well.

There will also be items on display at the Osaka exhibit that weren’t at the Tokyo exhibit, including a life-sized Kumatetsu costume as well as other new displays. Be sure not to miss these, either!
