Naruto x Ukiyo-e Collaboration - Naruto & Co. Appear in “The 36 Views of Mount Fuji”

A woodblock print collaboration between the TV anime show Naruto and Katsushika Hokusai’s ukiyo-e print series The 36 Views of Mount Fuji is to be released. The Aniplex official online store Aniplex+ is currently accepting pre-orders for the “Naruto Ukiyoe Collaboration Woodblock Print.”

The “Naruto Ukiyoe Collaboration Woodblock Print” is a print in which the familiar characters from Naruto compete with the most famous work from Hokusai’s 36 Views of Mount Fuji print series - “The Great Wave Off Kanagawa.” The manga’s protagonist Naruto Uzumaki and his rival Sasuke Uchiha appear on a boat while many other characters are drawn enjoying themselves elsewhere on the print.

Each woodblock print is individually handmade by skilled artisans who put their heart and soul into making each one which is imbued with their own particular touch. On top of that, the prints use the Echizen Kiduki Housho Japanese paper which is especially high quality even for Echizen paper and is usually used for specialist pictures, so the prints really are over flowing with a sense of quality.

The protagonists of the massively popular manga and anime franchise Naruto are ninjas and are also very popular overseas. This collaboration which crosses over with the ukiyo-e era of traditional Japanese culture seems like it’s going to prove popular. Pre-orders are currently open through Aniplex+ and will continue until July 27 with the release date scheduled for the end of October 2015. The print retails for 50,000 yen (including tax).

Naruto is a manga by Masashi Kishimoto which was serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump (Shueisha). The manga serialization ended in 2014, however various projects are currently in development as part of the Naruto New Era Opening Project. The culmination of the project is the theatrical movie Boruto: Naruto the Movie which is soon to open in theatres across Japan from Aug. 7. Expectations are rising for this new work in which Naruto’s son, Boruto, will become the protagonist.
