Sekai no Owari specially composes theme songs for live-action movie Attack on Titan
Hajime Isayama’s popular manga Attack on Titan is being adapted into a live-action movie under director Shinji Higuchi’s lead, gathering popular actors starting with Haruma Miura. It is none other than the movie Attack on Titan. The movie consists of two parts, Attack on Titan and Attack on Titan: End of the World, releasing on Aug. 1 (Sat.) and Sept. 19 (Sat.), respectively. It is a monumental work in focus among 2015 fall movies.
Yet another big name has joined the movie as the four-member band Sekai no Owari was chosen as theme song artist. It is quite luxurious as the band composed separate songs for each of the two parts. The theme song for the first movie is titled “Anti-Hero,” and the song for the second “SOS.” Both of them have fully English lyrics, making it a new challenge for the band. Dan the Automator, the producer of Gorillaz and Kasabian in the U.S., participated in “Anti-Hero,” while “SOS” was recorded in London by Ken Thomas, the producer of Sigur Rós. The songs took form under the hands of a globally active staff.
Sekai no Owari released their first album titled Earth in April 2010 and became popular in an instant after their major debut in August 2011. In 2014, they embarked on an arena tour in nine different venues, mobilizing 200,000 people. Although they just released their new album Tree on Jan. 14, their involvement with Attack on Titan is likely to further widen their field of activity.
Meanwhile, after its fast advancement in both manga and anime, the live-action movie for Attack on Titan is getting considerable attention as well, spreading overseas. The movie is already receiving release offers from around the globe, and with the announcement of the theme songs, the topic is likely to spread even further.
Comments about the songs from Sekai no Owari
- “Anti-Hero”
Lyrics: Fukase / Composition: Nakajin
Comment from Fukase (Sekai no Owari):
“We specially made ‘Anti-Hero’ for the tie-up with the Attack on Titan movies. It’s subject is ‘the love song of the antagonist.’ I started writing from the feelings that when you protect someone dear to you, you don’t want to hesitate, you don’t want to feel the eyes of the world on you.”
- “SOS”
Lyrics: Saori / Composition: Fukase
Comment from Saori (Sekai no Owari):
“After watching this movie revolving around battle, I wrote lyrics talking about how protecting someone is the same as protecting yourself. I’d be happy if you enjoyed this song at the end of the movie.”
Comment from Haruma Miura comment:
“These songs have a worldview different from Sekai no Owari’s previous songs, which is superbly expressed in the Attack on Titan-themed lyrics, the rhythm and melody. I thought the songs were fantastic, with a kind of addictiveness as if the more you listen, the more their mysterious charm possesses you.”
Comment from Producer Yamauchi:
“I felt that no one other than Sekai no Owari, who continue to sing about the despair and hopes of ‘being alive,’ could make theme songs for the movie, so I gave them the offer. It was a big help that all of them are big fans of the original manga; they readily accepted it. We had all the members watch scenes at an early stage, and they made us amazing songs with a kind of advancing ‘scheme’ for both parts of the movie. Please look forward to this collaboration between Attack on Titan, that crushes the ‘wall’ that is the existing movies, and SekaOwa, who crush the ‘wall”’ of preexistent music.”
