‘Knights of Sidonia’ Taking to the World Skies, Singapore Airlines to Offer In-Flight Showings to 60 Cities in 30 Countries

The anime series Knights of Sidonia gained popularity during its three-month broadcast between April and June 2014, and is now expanding into the world skies. The company that handles the series’ production, Polygon Pictures, announced that from March 1, 2015, Singapore Airlines will offer Knights of Sidonia in its in-flight entertainment.

Singapore Airlines operates its own in-flight entertainment system, known as KrisWorld. The aviation company’s in-flight network spans 60 cities in 30 countries, and provides services like films, dramas, and other videos and music. Among airline companies, there are a variety of systems used, but the quality and service provided by KrisWorld is held in high regard.

All 12 episodes of the Knights of Sidonia anime will be available for viewing. The episodes feature English subtitles, but the audio will remain in Japanese. Singapore Airlines will be the first airline to show this series as part of its in-flight entertainment. Knights of Sidonia can be viewed for a four-month period from March 1 to June 31, 2015. During March, Singapore Airlines is the only airline company scheduled to display the series.

Although airlines compete with each other for different in-flight entertainment services, it is rare to offer all of the episodes of a Japanese television anime series at once. Knights of Sidonia continues to take on new business ventures, in a manner that is characteristic to the science fiction tale.

Knights of Sidonia, an original science fiction manga by Tsutomu Nihei, is serialized in Kodansha’s monthly magazine Afternoon. Following the success of the anime television series, a film version of Knights of Sidonia will release March 6, 2015 in theaters, and the new series, Knights of Sidonia: Battle for Planet Nine, is set to broadcast from April. With an eye on overseas expansion, Knights of Sidonia is exclusively available for streaming with the major global media provider, Netflix. Since the rights to show a series in-flight differ from general distribution rights, the agreement with Singapore Airlines was able to go through.

Hardcore fans overseas also watch late night Japanese anime. However, this latest opportunity with in-flight entertainment will allow Knights of Sidonia to be seen by a more general audience and will greatly help increase recognition of the series.
