A Blu-ray box set has been confirmed for Tamako Market, an anime that was broadcast beginning in January 2013. The set will release on March 18, 2015. The story of Tamako Market begins when freshman high school student Tamako Kitashirakawa, whose family runs a rice cake shop in the Usagiyama Shopping District, meets a strange talking bird. The series warmly depicts Tamako’s everyday life.
An after story to the anime called Tamako Love Story was released in April 2014 and grossed 200 million yen at the box office with ticket sales recorded at 130,000. The director of the movie, Naoko Yamada, was highly praised for his work, winning the New Face Award in the Animation category of the 18th Japan Media Arts Festival. Since Tamako Love Story will also be introduced at the Japan Media Arts Festival Exhibit of Award-winning Works in February 2015, there is no better time for the Blu-ray box set to be released.
Along with the Blu-ray box set comes fresh content worth noting. The special drama CD “Kakeyo Sagaseyo Sekkeizu” is a newly recorded work. It tells the story of Usagiyama High School new student Kanna Makino and an incident involving her being struck in the forehead with a metal pole suddenly while surveying the gymnasium. It’s a story of intrigue surrounding the three members of the baton club: Tamako, Midori, and Kanna. The dialogue takes place the day before Tamako Market.
The set will also include fresh commentary. Director Yamada and Aya Suzaki, the voice of Tamako, discuss Episode 2 during “My Select Tamako.” There is also a storyboard collection for Episodes 2 and 9, a full color booklet, specially illustrated photo cards, all three episodes of the bonus short anime Dera’s Bar, and all three episodes of the short anime Occhoko Choi-chan. It has just the right amount of extravagance for a collector’s item.
The Blu-ray box set costs 25,000 yen excluding tax, and the first-press limited edition will come in a specially illustrated box. Also releasing on the same day is a best-of CD of Tamako Market and the movie Tamako Love Story. The compilation will mainly focus on vocal tracks and will also include four new songs, so don’t miss it.
