My Melody triumphantly won first place in the 2014 Sanrio Character Ranking - even defeating Hello Kitty. But the win wasn’t without some drama. Using the original meaning for the slang term kabe-don, which is the act of slamming one’s hand into the wall in front of someone to intimidate or prevent them from leaving, My Melody tweeted a slam against two of her competitors, Gudetama, a lazy egg, and Kirimi-chan, a salmon fillet. She tweeted an image of herself eating rice with egg and salmon accompanied by the words, “To Gudetama and Kirimi-chan, what about restraint…?” The Internet was rife with speculation and somehow, My Melody became a character that people couldn’t take their eyes away from. (The reference to this is included at the end of the article.)
That kind of charm that My Melody has is something that fans can enjoy a lot of in the “My Melody 40th Anniversary Fair Omoiyari to You,” which will open on Jan. 9, 2015 and last until Aug. 31, 2015.
The “My Melody 40th Anniversary Fair” is set to take place in the “Maryland” forest where My Melody lives, on the fourth floor in Sanrio Puroland. There will be a shop, café, and more! Everyone can also enjoy the Little Twin Stars (Kiki and Lala), who are welcoming their 40th year anniversary in 2015 as well as are the leading characters in the opening of the new parade, “Omoiyari to You.”
Visitors to the 40th Anniversary Fair can enjoy the “My Melody Room” which is filled with furniture and goods devoted to the little rabbit girl. In addition, visitors can purchase exclusively designed Sanrio Puroland goods at the specially set-up shop My Melody Shop and can take memorable pictures at a photo spot inspired by the forest where My Melody lives called Maryland.
