The latest work in the Ghost in the Shell: Arise series, titled Border 3: Ghost Tears, premieres in movie theaters across Japan on June 28. Released 25 years after the birth of Ghost in the Shell, this series depicts the story preceding Public Security Section 9 that hasn’t been depicted neither in the original manga nor in the works before Arise. The third part of the tetralogy, Ghost Tears, depicts Motoko Kusanagi’s love. Her lover, Hose, is a cyborg engineer, voiced by popular voice actor Tatsuhisa Suzuki. What direction will their love take?
The movie trailer of Ghost Tears was released on May 24, and in the roughly 1-minute video, many developments of the action-packed third film are included. As part of these developments, we can also see the facial expression of Motoko Kusanagi in love. Also, the ending theme, “Heart Grenade” by Sean Lennon and Cornelius, was unveiled for the first time in the trailer. It is safe to say this new piece is full of highlights.
Similarly to the first two parts, Ghost Tears was created by the same amazing staff including Kazuchika Kise, supervising director and character designer, and Tow Ubukata, series composition and scripts, based on the original manga by Masamune Shirow. Besides cyborg engineer Hose, other new characters such as the mysterious girl Emma also appear to heat up the story.
The story starts from a bomb attack, and it seems the terrorists responsible are linked to an ultra-wizard-level hacker known as the Fire Starter and the hero of the Cardis Independence War that formerly broke out in the Republic of Kuzan, Scylla. Meanwhile, a detective is killed in the dam explosion, leaving behind a mysterious prosthetic leg, which leads to Thied, the representative of a water enterprise in the Republic of Kuzan. The two cases intersect, and the target of the resurrected Scylla becomes clear…
You should definitely check the trailer before seeing the movie in theaters.
