The release date for the new 25th Anniversary Ghost in the Shell film, Ghost in the Shell: Shin Gekijoban has been announced. The film will be released throughout Japan on June 20. Along with this announcement, new information was released to the public, including new key visuals, promotional video material, and story details—plenty to whet the appetite of fans!
The new key visuals show the cast members of the film clad in thermo-optical camouflage suits. It’s an impressive visual that fully highlights the important role that these suits have had in the Ghost in the Shell series.
The new promotional video is 2 minutes and 43 seconds long, and is a special compilation for the 25th anniversary, beginning with footage from the first Ghost in the Shell film, and including all the works in the series that have been produced to date, along with additional shots of the new film. This video is highly recommended for those who have no experience with the world of Ghost in the Shell. You’ll get up to speed with the Ghost in the Shell universe in preparation for the new film’s release this June!
The plot of Ghost in the Shell: Shin Gekijoban opens with the outbreak of the most serious incident since the end of the war: the assassination of the Prime Minister. Behind this incident are political dealings that concern “Deadend,” a technological malfunction that will influence the future development of cyborgs. In addition is the appearance and disappearance of the “Fire Starter” computer virus, that simultaneously brainwashes, infiltrates ghosts and creates false memories. Furthermore, a clue uncovered in the investigation is seemingly linked to Kusanagi’s hidden upbringing…
We can guess that since the “Fire Starter” virus that relates to the events of Ghost in the Shell: Arise will make an appearance, this story is a continuation of that series. It seems that if viewers watch Ghost in the Shell: Arise - Alternative Architecture that will begin airing in April, they will be able to enjoy the new film even more.
The opening date of Walt Disney Studios’ live-action adaptation of Ghost in the Shell was also announced as being April 14, 2017, and the series will continue to further accelerate from there.
