This year marks the 20th anniversary of the TV anime for the hit Weekly Shonen Jump (Shueisha) basketball manga Slam Dunk. Syncing up with this, the five-volume “Slam Dunk Blu-ray Collection” will begin releasing on July 11. A project commemorating the 20th anniversary and the release of the Blu-ray collection has begun on the official site. The name of the project is “Everyone’s Favorite Slam Dunk Quote.” As the name suggests, fans will vote for their favorite quote from the series.
A big highlight of the story of Slam Dunk is the many memorable quotes said by protagonist Hanamichi Sakuragi and the other fascinating characters. There is no doubt that many of the famous scenes each contain deeply profound quotes. This includes “Because I’m a genius” said by Hanamichi, Hisashi Mitsui’s “Mr. Anzai...I want to play basketball…” and other favorite phrases. There are many such phrases.
In “Everyone’s Favorite Slam Dunk Quote,” fans will vote on which saying is their favorite. The campaign will run from May 13 to June 15 on the official site of the Blu-ray collection. Ten fans who take part in voting will be chosen to receive the first volume Blu-ray. Also, a countdown of the episodes containing the top five sayings will be broadcast on Kids Station. This will take place over five days from July 7-11.
Slam Dunk began serialization in 1990. In ‘93, the TV anime began broadcasting. It had a long run until ‘96, totalling 101 episodes. Its highest ratings were 21.4% with an average of 15.3%. Just like the manga, the anime was a huge hit.
