The Blu-ray and the DVD of the 2014 live-action film version of Gatchaman was released on March 5. To hype up the release, Gatchaman collaborated with the popular short anime series Ponkotsu Quest - The Demon King and the Dispatched Goblins. Ponkotsu Quest is popular for being a fiercely loose web anime. It’s a comedy about the weary everyday lives of Kaku and Imura, two ponkotsu goblins who serve the Demon King. The series is set in an RPG-like fantasy world, and the characters are popular as well for their incessant complaining that pokes fun at modern society.
Now, a special episode called “Business Trip” has been created. In it, Kaku and Imura are dispatched by an enemy character from Gatchaman. The two have an orientation about the Gatchaman members and their relation to one another and which weapons to look out for. Will they finally challenge themselves to actually fighting? The short is about 4 minutes and can be viewed for free on YouTube. How the story develops is a must-see.
Directing the short is Keisuke Matsumoto, who is popular for his independent short anime series Yaiyai Mori no Komi. His activities have also included holding a display at the 10th Creators World at Tokyo International Anime Fair 2012. He is likely well known to those with an interest in short anime. A commonality between Yaiyai Mori no Komi and Ponkotsu Quest are their interesting dialogue.
The live-action film Gatchaman was created in celebration of the 40th anniversary since the anime Science Ninja Team Gatchaman began airing. A point to note is the talented, young cast of actors that includes Tōri Matsuzaka and Gō Ayano. The Blu-ray of Gatchaman costs ¥5,800 and the DVD costs ¥4,800 (Both prices exclude tax.). Included as bonuses are a booklet, making-of and event footage, and the short anime Good Morning, Ninja Team Gatchaman which aired on Nippon TV’s new program Zip!
