Academy Award Nominated Director Shuhei Morita’s Debut Work Kakurenbo to Release in 28 Countries

The 86th Academy Awards will be held at the Dolby Theater in Hollywood, U.S. on March 3. Here, the winning works from 2013 and staff will be announced. Noteworthy nominees from Japan include The Wind Rises by director Hayao Miyazaki for Best Animated Feature Film and Possessions by director Shuhei Morita for Best Animated Short Film. We wonder who the awards will go to.

On Feb. 24, director Morita’s directorial debut work Kakurenbo was released in 28 countries. It can be downloaded on iTunes and Google Play. Kakurenbo is the debut work of studio Yamato Works which became independent from Kamikazedouga in 2003. It was jointly produced by Comix Wave, which is acquainted with director Makoto Shinkai and others, and was released in 2004 as a 24-minute short work. It depicts a world that feels somehow nostalgic while bringing to mind futuristic scenery. It was highly praised both in Japan and abroad for its peculiar ideas and beautiful visuals. A point not to be missed is that Junko Takeuchi, the voice of Uzumaki Naruto in Naruto, voices the character Hikora.

Now that Possessions is being recognized as an Academy Award nominee, there is no better time to look back on the work that served as director Morita’s starting point. There is no doubt that many people also have an attachment to this work.
