On Jan. 20, the broadcast times and networks for the previously announced TV anime Haikyū!! were revealed. The anime will begin broadcasting in April during a 30-minute time slot at 5 p.m. every Sunday, a time slot that is well-known on MBS and TBS for having the pet name “Sun 5.” Because “Sun 5” is a time slot that many children are able to watch due to it being during the weekend in the evening, it’s highly popular as an anime broadcast time. Previous anime to broadcast at this time include Code Geass: Lelouch of the Rebellion R2, Mobile Suit Gundam 00, Fullmetal Alchemist, and Blue Exorcist. Currently, Magi: The Kingdom of Magic is filling this spot.
Haikyū!! is a popular manga by Haruichi Furudate that has been serializing in Weekly Shonen Jump since 2012. The manga tells a story of adolescence that follows a high school volleyball club. Two years isn’t a long time to be serialized, but it has picked up attention as the next big sports manga. Having such acclaim, it was decided to adapt it into an anime. The anime is being created by Production I.G, a studio that has created many other popular anime including Kuroko’s Basketball and Psycho-Pass. Due to it broadcasting in the popular “Sun 5” time slot, there are high expectations for the anime. It’s safe to say that this is one anime starting in April to keep an eye on.
Along with the announcement of the broadcast information, key visuals featuring the main characters Shōyō Hinata and Tobio Kageyama were also released. Hinata is in a dynamic attack pose and Kageyama looks like he’s thinking about something; the visuals show off each character’s personality. In charge of character designs is Takahiro Kishida of Puella Magi Madoka Magica and Durarara!! fame. There is plenty to be excited about from this anime starting in April.
