Fantasy and a Love Story: A Look Back at the First Season of Nagi-Asu: A Lull in the Sea (Part 2)

Love during the time between childhood and adulthood: A complicated love story.

Nagi-Asu: A Lull in the Sea works off of two components: “fantasy” and “love story.” On the love story side, each character’s desires are confounded by interference, and a complicated roller coaster ride is depicted.

The main characters are a group of seven young boys and girls. Hikari Sakishima, the leader of the group, is someone who runs blindly ahead with disregard for others, but he is an honorable boy; Manaka Mukaido is a pure girl and a crybaby, but from the very beginning, she begins to take her first steps in a new direction; Chisaki Hiradaira is a girl in the “older sister” role who looks out for everyone, but she is a coward when it comes to love; and Isaki Kaname is a cool and aloof boy who can’t see into his true feelings. There is also a fifth member who joins this group of four friends from the sea world as their middle school classmate: Tsumugu Kihara. Tsumugu is the grandson of a fisherman who lives on land and displays acceptance toward those from the sea. He is quiet and goes at his own pace, and he’s a bit of an airhead. The other two are Miuna Shiodome, a girl who is usually quiet but has a wicked tongue when she opens her mouth, and Sayu Hisanuma, an energetic and cheerful girl, both of whom are classmates and close friends in elementary school and both of whom become associated with the previous five by helping build the “Ojōshi-sama” to be used on the Ofunehiki.

As for their relationships between each other, Hikari likes Manaka, but Manaka begins to have feelings for Tsumugu. Chisaki, who keeps an eye on the relationship between Hikari and Manaka, actually likes Hakari, and Kaname, who is also a spectator in all of this, likes Chisaki. Chemistry between Miuna and Hikari, as well as a longing between Sayu and Kaname also begins to form due to them working on the Ojōshi-sama together.

Boys and girls who have just entered the time of adolescence––a time between being a child and being an adult––who harbor in their hearts romantic feelings that are a delicate string of emotions more dangerous and delicate than before, and each one can’t get their unrequited love across.

On top of this is a forbidden romance between Akari (Hikari’s older sister) and Itaru (Miuna’s father) due to one being from the sea and one being from land, and they begin being looked down upon because of this and because Akari’s father Tomoru is a priest. There is a spirited rivalry between the sea people and land people. Thus, even the social situation of the adult world is deeply layered.

Tremors that can’t be controlled, holding onto feelings that can’t easily be described––young boys and girls in the midst of a frantic and sorrowful adolescence. Before the hibernation of the sea people, they will begin to be compelled by a new determination.
