The anime film Patema Inverted was released on Nov. 9 Japan-wide. At the same time, reservations for a Time of Eve T-shirt also started. This T-shirt is being released as the 10th series of Nippon Broadcast’s brand 193t, with the ninth being Patema Inverted, meaning that T-shirts of two of Yasuhiro Yoshiura’s works are being consecutively released.
Time of Eve was released online in six episodes in 2008, and a full-length film compiled from the episodes was released in theaters in 2010. The story takes place in an age where androids have just been put to common use. The protagonist, Rikuo, follows his home android, Sammy, to a cafe called Time of Eve after finding a strange phrase recorded in her activity log. The basic rule of the cafe is “no differentiating between humans and androids,” and in this cafe, Rikuo’s feelings blend together with that of Nagi’s, the cafe employees, and the regular customers. Although it was a small-scale release, word spread fast, and with it so did its popularity, giving it an unusual cult following.
The name of the T-shirt is “Time of Eve [Ring].” On the front, there is the ring that comes out of Sammy’s head, and on the back, the English phrase “Are you enjoying the Time of EVE?” can be seen. This English sentence is of symbolic importance, as it is also written on the cafe’s entrance in the anime. The shirt is available in five sizes from extra small to extra large and comes in either black or white. It costs ¥3,990.
The Patema Inverted T-shirt, to which pre-orders have already ended, was released on Nov. 9 in synch with the movie release. Together with the Time of Eve shirt, these might be a good way for fans to get their fill of director Yoshiura’s worlds.
