Seinen Volleyball Manga Haikyū!! Gets Anime Adaptation, Broadcast to Begin in April 2014

Weekly Shonen Jump (Shueisha), which churns out popular works in high numbers, is the origin of many hit anime, with its pages holding the original manga of many anime that are familiar to just about anyone. Once again, another new anime is being born from the pages of this well-reputed magazine. That anime is Haikyū!! which is based on the manga of the same name that is currently serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump. The popular manga has more than 2.5 million copies in print. The anime is scheduled to begin broadcasting in April 2014.

The original manga for Haikyū!! written by Haruichi Furudate has been serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump since 2012. The manga tells a fervent seinen volleyball story that takes place at Karasuno High School and centers on a young man named Shōyō Hinata who is crazy about volleyball and a genius volleyball player named Tobio Kageyama. The work is filled with highlights having to do with comradery, maturity, and intense volleyball matches.

On the occasion of the anime adaptation being announced, the production studio was also quickly announced thereafter. The studio in charge of the anime is Production I.G. Production I.G is known for edgy works like the Ghost in the Shell series, Blood+, and Eden of the East, and it has been increasing more and more the breadth of these types of works in recent years. One group of works that falls under this category is sports anime. Popular works from Production I.G in this genre include Kuroko’s Basketball which began in 2012 and Ace of Diamond, a joint effort with Madhouse that began airing this month. Since Haikyū!! is themed around volleyball, dynamic scenes overflowing with speed are expected.

In addition to the anime announcement, the official site for the anime also opened on Oct. 7. The anime’s official Twitter account has also become active. Since there is still more than half a year until the anime’s broadcast, the information that is currently known is scarce. New information from here on will be posted to the official site and Twitter.
